Social Lounge and Bar for JIS
The lounge has 3 distinct sections: a 1920s Great Gatsby inspired lounge, clad in glamorous gold trim and subtle ever-changing mood lighting. The motif of the chandeliers, panels and light fittings are geometric patterns matched with the wood panel flooring; next, a modern Japanese inspired Sakura Modern lounge, Arabescato marble pillars gives the room a bright and more feminine touch, accented by pink mood lighting and wallpaper. JIS KL is all about communal seating without looking tacky or drab.; finally, an intimate parlour reminiscent of a Moroccan tearoom.

Design Challenge
JIS, originally from Japan. We need Malaysian people to understand JIS culture, by designing a bar which significant and identical to Japanese culture, yet able to adopt to Malaysian market. Hence most of the materials and fittings were imported from overseas. And yet we need to complete the full renovation within 4 months, for this 11,000 sqft shop lots which located at level 3. Time is critical but we managed to complete everything within 3 and a half months.
Project Duration
JIS Kuala Lumpur is located in Star Boulevard, two minutes away from the heart of city center, KLCC. The project started in early June 2019 and completed in December 2019. It tooks nearly 6 months from design till completion.
Operation Flow
By creating spacious seating layout, people able to connect and socialize each other face to face. Spacing between seating was carefully measured to ensure maximum comfort, while dine-in as well as interacting with people. Color changing from the glass wall and table lamps acted as a key element, which has ability to makes people forget stressfulness from works and focus on connecting to others. And yes,it works.
Inspiration
The project attempts to bridge time and space, a ‘Back to the Future, Gateway to the Past’.The Art Deco design features bold geometric patterns, hard angles and lavish use of gold and steel. The Sakura Modern lounge takes inspiration from Zen philosophy. The open plan yet cosy atmosphere, bright and graceful lighting, are reminiscent of spring. The colourful futuristic glass panel can be visualised as a tunnel bridging two separate points in space-time from the Gatsby and Sakura Modern era.
Project Overview
JIS Kuala Lumpur Social Lounge and Bar has been a Silver winner in the Interior Space and Exhibition Design award category in the year 2020 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Silver A' Design Award celebrates top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation. This award acknowledges creations that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, reflecting the designer's deep understanding and skill. Silver A' Design Award recipients are recognized for their contribution to raising industry standards and advancing the practice of design. Their work often incorporates original innovations and elicits a strong emotional response, making a notable impact on the improvement of everyday life.
